The Perfect Florida Keys Couples' Trip

For couples looking for a laid back tropical getaway without even having to leave the US, my top recommendation is always the Florida Keys. This area offers a little bit of everything, from snorkeling and fishing to dining and nightlife and luxurious resorts.

If you’re coming to the Florida Keys for just a few days, then consider picking one island to base yourself in. They all offer top notch beaches and water sports, and you won’t want to spend all of your time traveling. After all, the Keys are all about kicking back and relaxing! If you have a week or more, you’ll have time to split your stay between two spots and enjoy the scenic road trip down Route 1. Here are my favorite spots for couples planning a trip here.

Bungalows Key Largo

Key Largo

Just an hour south of Miami, Key Largo is a small, low key town and a good fit for those looking to unplug a little bit. Couples will love staying at Bungalows Key Largo, a fabulous adults only, all inclusive resort set on a quiet, private beach. Perfect for romance, each room is set in its own private villa, and the resort offers highlights like a sunset champagne cruise, a unique zen spa, and delicious dining options.

Islamorada

Continuing on your drive, you’ll soon hit Islamorada. For those looking for a little more action and nightlife, then Islamorada is a great place to stay. This island is also known as being the sport fishing capital of the world.

Lovers of fishing, golfing, and water sports will love the Cheeca Resort & Lodge, set on its own private waterfront. This resort offers a little bit of everything, and you might find that you’ll never even need to leave. Splurge for the ocean view suites with a tub on the balcony.

Little Torch Key

For the ultimate romantic experience, indulge in the lesser known Little Torch Key. This is a popular fishing and kayaking destination and home to a marine sanctuary. However, most visitors here come for the ultra luxurious Little Palm Island, an exclusive private island resort with 30 oceanfront bungalows, romantic canopy beds, outdoor showers, personal hammocks, a torchlit restaurant in the sand, massage beds that are actually in the ocean, and friendly Key deer who will eat and drink right out of your hands.

Key West

And at the end of the road, you’ll land in famous Key West. Many people will spend their whole trip just on this island -- and for good reason. The southernmost point in the U.S., Key West has it all, with white sand beaches, a charming downtown with pastel colored historic homes, restaurants and nightlife along Duval Street, and all of the water activities you’ll need for a great trip. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Ernest Hemingway house, a walking tour of the Old Town, a photo opp at the southernmost point buoy, and the lively Mallory Square at sunset.

If being beachfront is on your agenda, then stay at the charming Southernmost Beach Resort, situated in a quiet corner just a short walk from the action of Duval Street. Rooms are bright and airy, many with ocean views, and the resort offers lots of fun weekly activities like beer and wine tasting, ice cream socials, and beach yoga classes. To be in the heart of the Old Town, stay at the modern adults only H20 Suites and enjoy a room with your own private pool.
