5 Places You Can Visit This Winter

Dreaming of a vacation this winter? Whether you're looking for the chance to reset and recharge or simply safely enjoy a change of scenery, here are 5 great options close to home that you visit right now.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Looking for sunshine and sand? Then Mexico is always a good idea. Riviera Maya is home to some of the country's best beaches (and some of the best in the world) and water sports. Plus, you'll have easy access here to explore Mayan ruins, the boho town of Tulum, and the cenote swimming holes.

You'll be spoiled for choice among Riviera Maya's plethora of beautiful, affordable resorts. One of my top recommendations here is the fabulous UNICO 2087, an awesome, modern adults only place situated in Akumal along one of the best beaches. Beautiful views, gourmet dining, swanky rooms, and endless entertainment make this the ultimate getaway spot for couples.

Mexico has already been open for tourism for several months along its coasts, and these areas have been setting the bar high for safety and health protocols by exceeding the new global standards. When I visited Mexico myself recently, hotel staff even sanitized my suitcase and my shoes.

Travelers do not need to take a PCR test to visit Mexico. You'll simply fill out a health questionnaire online. Flights to Cancun are easy and quick from many major US cities.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the latest countries to safely welcome back US travelers.

Costa Rica is a great destination choice for active travelers and lovers of nature. Some of the top things to do here include jungle treks and hiking, chasing waterfalls, exploring the hanging bridges in the rainforest, ziplining and ATV tours, soaking in hot springs, and surfing and beaching.

When you're ready to relax, there are some really incredible and unique places to stay, from jungle bungalows to large scale beach resorts. Around Arenal Volcano in the heart of the rainforest, many hotels have trails on site that lead right into the jungle and hot springs where guests can unwind.

Costa Rica was one of our favorite trips as a family and offered so many great options for all ages.

Travelers will not need to take a PCR test to visit Costa Rica. You will need to present proof of international health coverage or purchase local coverage for the duration of your stay.

Savannah/Charleston

The Lowcountry, as this area is fondly nicknamed, is one of the most beautiful areas to explore right in the United States. Savannah and Charleston are the two shining stars here, and both cities offer a myriad of historical sights, charming antebellum architecture and cobblestone streets, an excellent dining scene, and tons of quaint B&Bs.

Both cities offer trolley tours by day and ghost tours by night. Lovers of history won't want to miss a visit to Fort Sumter and Patriots Point in Charleston, and lovers of the beach and nature will enjoy Tybee Island outside of Savannah.

The climate in this area is fairly moderate, meaning you'll still be able to enjoy the outdoors and local attractions even in the winter months.

For just a weekend, you may want to choose just one of these fabulous cities to explore -- as there is a ton to see and do in each. For those with more time, you can visit both (they are 2 hours apart by car) and even stop at Hilton Head Island in between.

Sedona, Arizona

Gorgeous Sedona, Arizona, is just up the road from Phoenix. This area is known for its red rocks, and the views everywhere are truly stunning.

There are trails in this area for every skill level, from all day hikes to short family friendly trails. Jeep tours and ATV tours are also very popular and take you off roading deeper into the red rocks. You can also take a helicopter tour, visit wineries in the Verde Valley, and swim in Oak Creek.

I visited Sedona last month with my kiddos, and it was the perfect opportunity to get out in nature and enjoy a socially distanced vacation.

A visit to Sedona can also be part of a bigger trip to visit Scottsdale, home to the most incredible spa resorts in the country, and the Grand Canyon, which needs no introduction.

Colorado

If you're a snowbird looking for skiing, snowboarding, and Rocky Mountain views, then look no further than Colorado.

There are several great bases to choose from. Skiers and snowboarders alike will love Aspen's world class ski opportunities and four mountains with various slopes that are great for any experience level. And when you're not on the slopes, you'll enjoy all of the amenities of Aspen's luxury ski resorts.

Just north in the Vail Valley, the towns of Beaver Creek and Vail offer stunning Rocky Mountain scenery and some of the biggest slopes in the region. The vibe here is that of an unhurried alpine village, where visitors can leave it all behind and simply enjoy snow activities, spas, breweries, and ice castles.
